Who I Am
about me
A common question I get is “how did you get started doing this”? And the answer is simply this.
We had a large blank outdoor space that desperately needed something on it. I started looking on pinterest for ideas and came across different styles of wood wall art. This intrigued me! We happened to have some leftover pine tongue and groove planks from a recent project. My husband strapped these together to create a 4 foot by 6 foot ‘canvas’ for me. I drew a sun and rays design, then painted and stained it. I sealed it with outdoor polyurethane, then we mounted it on the outdoor wall space. It has held up well over the past four years and is the perfect piece for the space.
I didn’t really have any aspirations to start using power tools and for the better part of a year, I patiently drew out designs on project boards then coloured them in with paint and stain. When we replaced our cedar fence, I had the contractor set aside the old fence boards for me. I dried them out, cleaned them up and started using them for my art. My initial pieces included mountains and quilt designs. I used to make quilts as a hobby and it was fun to transfer that onto wood.
Eventually I did become brave enough to start using power tools and I haven’t looked back. I’m always learning new skills and trying new techniques. I’m excited to see where this creative journey takes me.
I’ll be sharing more about my story through my blog. I’ll include how and where I source the wood I use, provide updates on markets I’m participating in, how I come up with my ideas and more.
